The night before Colorado announced they were joining the Pac Ten, school officials said they have not been in talks with the conference and were not planning on joining the conference. Let's say the Big East sent out feelers to BYU and BYU said they were not interested for the reasons Holmoe said above, too far and missed school time. Holmoe is a class act and he would never throw the Big East under the bus and say he turned down an invite. Also, if the Big East contacted BYU it would likely be thru a third party so there would be no direct talks or approaches.

This article only gives the expected official responses. As we know from the Big Ten and Pac Ten expansions, so much goes on secretly behind the scenes. And no way Holmoe is going to disclose what goes on behnd the scenes to this reporter.

I am also an ex mormon that loves BYU football(and drinks beer.... which doesn't matter).  There is no question that the church is trying to use the sport as a missionary tool.  Which to me is fine.  Every religion is trying to expand and trying to teach people what it believes is true.  After an immense amount of research I feel without question there is no validity to the mormon church.  I am completely happy and at peace with that decision.  But I grew up from a young kid going to every game.  I remember staying up all night to watch the BYU games in Hawaii.  I love BYU football.  Lets talk about that from now on.  Don't you get sick of all the stupid Ute fans getting on and attacking the mormon religion instead of talking about the Article?  Who cares about the mormon churches stance on gay marriage if you don't believe in the church anyway and you aren't a part of it?  

On the other hand is anyone else exicted to see apo, heaps, kavenga, and Van Noy.  this could be a fun year!!! 

Sure, I'll leave religion off the sports page when BYU admins, coaches, players and fans stop putting religion in the sports page.  I know too much to simply ignore what BYU means when it says it wants more "exposure".  That is mixing football with proselyting and you know darn well that the church and university sees the football program as a missionary tool.  When that stops and the football team becomes, you know, a football team not a missionary tool, then I think everyone will leave religion off the sports page.

exmo4byu - if you are an ex-mo, what are you now, a Curly or Shemp or maybe the unknown Marx brother, or just a pretender?  Regardless your comments are ignorant. I'm not sure the written word is your best tool, it mostly reveals you as a sad, bitter person.  Maybe try Harpo's gig and stick with honking a horn.  You could still be noisy but not reveal your sad inner-self.  Or better yet, loose the hate, have a beer, enjoy football and leave religion off the sports page.

Yeah, I laid it on pretty thick last night, but then I know how the mormons treat BYU football, as though it is part of the church's missionary effort.  Anyway, I've been fan for decades and it isn't me that ties BYU football to religion, I'm just commenting on it.  As far as the rumors go with the Big East and others, I think Holmoe has handled it pretty well.  I expect BYU, TCU and UofU to all make waves in their new endeavours.  Unfortunately for TCU, they have to wait.  Anyway...

You seem to be having more difficulty separating religion and football, than anyone else.  You're the only person mentioning it.

Your screen name says it all.  When you are on a sports website and your screen name is about declaring that you are an ex-Mormon, no other questions need to be asked.

Much as I love BYU football, most of BYU's fans are simply obnoxious, pious religio-brats.  Once you can see past all that crap, you will actually be able to witness great football and great tradition.  *shrug*   Just don't let the mormons ruin the fact that great football is played at BYU.

Glad CBS verified the facts here, but it comes as no surprise. Even if BYU and the Big East had had official talks it would not have taken long for either to realize that it's not the best fit. Besides if both BYU and TCU topped the Big East year after year, the East coast BCS-bias thing would take a really hard hit. Just saying! Still the freedom of independence in the wild West is a much more interesting prospect. Let the whole nation see Spirit, Tradition, and Honor at work! For years now BYU has proven that a team can hold a high standard for its players with a good value system and high academics and yet still win games. It can then be proud of those wins while it produces something much more important in the years to come--winners that it can be proud of.

Yes, BYU has its graduates who never really got it, so-to-speak, but for the most part its graduates are great individuals who enter the workforce having already proven able to hold themselves to a higher standard. Whether BYU does well in football or not across the land, I hope people see BYU for what it is, a great institution for exemplar self-disciplined happy people, and that it is willing to stand alone if it has to for the standards it holds dear (And it looks like it has to do just that, given the money-driven system that is corrupting college sports these days). There's really no use for freedom if you don't stand for anything, and no reason to stand out if you are just the same standard as everyone else. Lead the way! Strive for excellence in your lives and families, and more than just football! Go BYU!

As well they should boycott BYU over their short-sighted and offensive stand on gay rights.  I'm embarassed at the things my alma mater has supported.
