Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

Boise State announced last December that its impending move to the Big East wouldn't take place until 2013. But with West Virginia still caught in limbo between its old league and its leap to the Big 12, the San Jose Mercury-News'Jon Wilner reported this week that the Broncos might still be considering an offer to step directly into the Mountaineers' scheduling shoes should WVU extricate itself in time for the 2012 season.

Boise president Bob Kustra told the Idaho Statesman Friday that he had "heard those rumors." But he stated firmly that any move for this coming season is already off the table.

"It's too late. I can't imagine how anyone can pull that off," he said. "We would never want to pull it off in a fashion that dealt shabbily with our existing partners in the Mountain West. I don't think that could ever work."

If the Mountaineers succeeded in joining the Big 12 by this fall -- and with a 10-team schedule already released to the conference's television partners, the expectation both in the Big 12 offices and Morgantown is that they will -- the Big East will be set to play out the 2012 season with just seven members: Cincinnati, South Florida, UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, Syracuse and Pitt. (The Orange and Panthers have both announced their intentions to join the ACC and are scheduled to leave in 2014, but both could look to leave next year if the Mountaineers are successful in their attempt to bolt early.)

Once 2013 hits, the Big East will receive a substantial boost in the form of five new members, the Broncos included. But for 2012, facing the ugly prospect of just six conference games and a matter of weeks in which to find a nonconference replacement for the Mountaineers, it's understandable if John Marinatto would like to see BSU make a last-gasp switch. Unfortunately for him, it seems like Kustra and the Broncos aren't in quite such a hurry.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

I was thinking again that Texas Christian might be better off going to Big 12 than San Diego State. Also the leftover of CUSA, WAC and MWC will make up a super conference.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

There's may be a simple solution to this. West Virginia, Boise State and San Diego State join the Big 12. The eastern teams of CUSA will join the Big East along with Navy. The leftover of the CUSA will work with WAC to make up a conference.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

HoustonVol is absolutely 100 percent incorrect. West Virginia's invite to the Big 12 is not contingent end on being there in 2012 - even the Big 12 commissioner has said as much. It's the Big 12 that wants WVU immeadiately as they need ten teams to meet their tv contract terms. That is why the Big 12 is going to chipminnsome of the cost WVU will have to pay to the big east.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

Boise State is smart.  They should delay their move to the Big East as long as possible.  If the Big 12 decides to grab Lousiville, the Big East is in big danger of losing their AQ status.  If the Big 12 takes both Louisville and Cincinnati, the Big East is finished as an AQ conference.  Boise State and San Diego State will be watching this possibility very closely.  They would be much better off staying in the MWC if the Big East loses any more teams.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

Here is the scoop to why WVU is in such a rush for this year. WVU knows that if they do not make the jump now, the offer may not be there for next year. Pitt and SYR can wait because the ACC can wait. The B12 needs a team now, or it gives all of the TV partners the right to reduce the value of their TV packages or cancel them out right. So the invite to WVU was you will come now, or we will find someone else that will fill your spot. Now the BE needs to find a school with deep enough pockets and be desperate enough to make he jump now. BSU is not doing it because they know that the invite will still be there next year, if the conference has survived. The only school that I know of with enough finacial resources AND desperate enough to blaze a trail out of their current conference to the Big East is Memphis. Which there has been a lot of internet chatter regarding Memphis and the Big East this past week.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

This entire meltdown that would be the Big East continues to look inept under the less that watchful eye of Marinatto. The powers that control the BE first need to get rid of Marinatto. If this guy had any clue he would have made the changes necessary to strengthen this conference years ago. Instead, he wants to hang on to teams that don't want to be here, he goes out and recruits teams from every corner of the country creating a geographical nightmare and now due to his stubbornness can't even get the teams in place that want to be here. Why would you not cut your losses and gather your gains and make this thing work. What possible advantage is it to hang on to teams that want out. Collect your exit fee and open the door.

Boise State: 'too late' for 2012 move to Big East

Why is it that Boise realizes that leaving in 2012 would put the MWC it's hoe for only one year in a bind while west Virginia who has been in the Big East a lot longer and was a proponent of the 27 month waiting period doesn't see or care the bind it puts it's old league by tring to leave in 2012? The Big Eat will be just fine in 2013 when it's we members arrive. West Virginia should have some class and leave in 2013.
