Last winter Notre Dame and USC were locked in a recruiting battle for running back Amir Carlisle. As has been the case on the field for most of the last decade, it was a fight that USC won, as the four-star running back and one of the top high school prospects in the state of California wound up choosing to attend USC.

That's no longer the case. The South Bend Tribune reported on Saturday that Carlisle was transferring from USC to Notre Dame for family reasons. Those reasons being that while Carlisle's father, Duane Carlisle, used to work for the San Francisco 49ers, but recently took a job at Purdue. So in order to be closer to his family Carlisle has decided to leave USC for South Bend.

“It was our intention to stay (in California), but circumstances changed,” Duane Carlisle told the South Bend Tribune. “We’re a close-knit family.

“This definitely was a family decision. It wasn’t just an Amir decision. We felt as though Notre Dame would be the best fit for him for the next four years.”

Carlisle saw limited time during his freshman season with the Trojans, carrying the ball only 19 times and picking up 118 yards. He also caught 7 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Though in the one game Carlisle saw a lot of time against Colorado, he put up some impressive numbers that helped show why he was so highly-touted coming out of high school. Against the Buffaloes Carlisle had 10 carries for 90 yards while catching 2 passes for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Due to the transfer Carlisle will have to sit out the 2012 season, but he will have three years of eligibility remaining once the 2013 season begins.

The Irish are quitters.  I guess since Amir is a quitter too, it is a perfect fit.

PeteND, Let me get this right. ND is a recruit juggernaut? Yet you need his speed? He wasn't even a starter at USC.

I wonder what that makes USC recruiting if your a "juggernaut"? The on field results don't seem to match your "juggernaut". Must be the coaching...

Good move for his family and ND. He wasn't getting too far on the depth chart as well. Later on he might have...

My question is does that free up a recruit slot for USC or is it lost? If we are allowed an extra slot then it works for USC as well. We can now select an extra player wher we have higher needs. If it's lost, it could hurt down the line in year two or three of scholarship reductions.

neither of these teams are top teir anymore. The beginning of every season, same big hype, no proof. Monte Kiffen is a great d coach and is the only thing so.cal has going besids Barkley. The head coach LAME WIMPEN is a bad joke. Talk about being close to daddy. Daddy is the only reason LAME has  job. don't know who this kid is but he didn't help himself by going from one loser program to another.

"He wants to be close to his daddy?  Time to grow up.  He is leaving a great football program to go to a wanna be/once was program.
Stupid."  --TOOmanyPeople (who flies the linked red 'S' and 'C')

Howsabout wwe make some room then, Absalom? Maybe we should just dig a pit and bury all of those annoying, punk-*ss Trojans? Geez, I never thought I'd stand up for a Golden Domer, but at least they haven't had four separate academic cheating scandals in their athletic program in the years since I graduated high school. Good old USC, where the administration can always find a Jewish or Chinese kid to sit a test for a jock or a coed to get on her knees for a recruit.

Its really stupid to want to be close to your family? Are you serious, what's so bad about a young person who values his family. Give me a break. Instead of telling Amir to grow up you might want to take a look in the mirror, then again you might not like what you see. Good luck Amir, I hope you have a geat career with the Irish.

congrats amir.  moving to a much better place overall - you'll appreciate the education and the overall better quality of person.  ND is again a recruiting juggernaut and we need your speed with cierre probably going pro after next season.  now we get the armstead boys and we are off and running.  looking forward to seeing you light it up in 2013.
