Report: Michael Dyer seeking transfer from Auburn

It's not official just yet. But it looks more and more like All-SEC running back and 2011 BCS title game MVP Michael Dyer has played his last game for Auburn.

CBSSports.com RapidReporter Jay Tate reported Wednesday that Dyer has asked for his release from the Auburn program and plans to transfer. The hotly-rumored destination for his services is Arkansas State, where former Tiger offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn was recently named the Red Wolves' head coach.

According to one Internet report, Dyer has already filed enrollment paperwork at the Jonesboro, Ark., school, but that report has been disputed by spokespersons at both Auburn and Arkansas State as well as the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. An Arkansas native whose family still lives in the Natural State, Dyer could conceivably apply for a hardship waiver in order to play for the Red Wolves without sitting out the standard transfer penalty. (Whether such a waiver would be granted remains highly debatable.)

In Mobile, Ala. for the GoDaddy.com Bowl, both Arkansas State athletic director Dean Lee and ASU interim head coach David Gunn told the local Press-Register they had no information on any plans by Dyer to transfer to their program.

"There's nothing I can confirm or deny," Lee said. "I have no knowledge of anything in that regard."

Whether he lands with Malzahn at ASU or not, however, at this stage it seems unlikely Dyer will ever return to Auburn. Transfer rumors have dogged him ever since he was suspended for the Tigers' Chick-Fil-A Bowl win over Virginia, and with their volume reaching fever pitch Wednesday, it seems only a matter of time before Dyer, Gene Chizik or both make some kind of official announcement of their parting of ways.

A former five-star recruit out of Little Rock, Dyer ran for 1,242 yards as a sophomore in 2011, his second straight 1,000-yard season.

Dyer will be able to play any where he wants to. Crazy as it sounds, Arkansas state has a great returning team and returning QB. Playing in their comference (which is as good as boise states) they could go undefeated to a bowl game. He could be the final peice of the puzzel for Ark.State to be a real team.

I'm thankful for what he did for the Tigers last year on their way to the National Championship.  And, as a fan, I also appreciate his contribution this season.  That said, based on the bowl game against Virginia, others could probably fill in nicely and be just as effective.  You can look around the NFL and see situations like these all over the place(T.O. comes to mind, Brandon Lloyd, Santonio Holmes, Brandon Marshall and others).  The teams always get rid of them.  They screw up the chemistry on the team and divide it into 'clicks'.....as opposed to bringing everyone together working towards a common goal (which is paramount at that level).  I would rather have ten guys like McCaleb and win 7 games than win 12 games with a pain in the ass in the backfield that thinks he's better than everyone else.  Perhaps, you feel differently, based on your comment, and that's your prerogative.  All that suggests to me is that you haven't played any football yourself.  War Eagle!

I hate when head coaches get credit when it isn't due, so I'm hopeful that Dyer will transfer. But being at Arkansas St will probably hurt his draft stock vs. less competition.

Chizik gets all the credit for bringing a championship back to Auburn, but it should be blatantly obvious at this point that it was all Cam Newton along with Malzahn that brought it home.

Chizik gets his bag extension, but Alabama will rule the tide/war eagle rivalry for years to come.

There is a bunch of baseless assumptions here. Anyone saying it was an arrest or failed drug test is an idiot. Arrest records are public record and any drug test that is failed always comes out (see LSU this year if you want recent evidence). It sounds like the majority of his issue was an attitude problem and he didn't want to take the necessary steps that Chizik laid out to become a part of the team again. It sounds like to me that his success has gone to his head and he wasn't willing to earn his position every day in practice.

Of course I wish him the best but it's kind of sad to see a kid who could've displayed his talent on an SEC level stage for a third year in a row and easily be a first round pick in the NFL draft to now playing for Arkansas State and essentially fading into obscurity. This will tremendously hurt his draft status and no I'm not saying he will not get drafted I am saying he will not get drafted as high as he would've.

As for Auburn they will be fine. Tre Mason seems to have a lot of promise, Onterrio McCalebb has proven to be a threat on every play, Grant and Blakely are both transfers with college experience, and not to mention a talented kid in Jovon Robinson is committed. I wouldn't be shocked to see another high profile back sign with Auburn now that there is more room in the backfield.

MrAUTiger, you better thank God you had that "cancer" in the BCS Championship game last year against Oregon. My question is: Would he be viewed as "entitled" if Awburn had a better year?

Really classless! Rooting for LSU over another in state school? California is a good place for you.
