After losing head coach Larry Fedora to the North Carolina job, Southern Miss needed to find a new face to head its football program. It has apparently found that new head coach in South Carolina defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Ellis Johnson.

Johnson, who is three days away from his 60th birthday, has reportedly accepted an offer from USM after interviewing with school president Martha Saunders on Monday night, according to the Clarion-Ledger, and is expected to accept the job as early as Tuesday. Johnson has a brief history with Southern Miss, as he was the defensive coordinator there in 1988 and 1989.

The South Carolina defense ranked in the Top 15 nationally in total defense in three of Johnson's four years in Columbia, and this year was the Gamecocks' best of the four. South Carolina ranked second nationally in pass efficiency defense this season, and fourth nationally (behind three other SEC teams, of course).

Prior to his time at South Carolina, Johnson spent time at various teams in the SEC and elsewhere in the southeastern U.S, including a four-year stint as Alabama's defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2000. Johnson was the head coach at the Citadel, his alma mater, from 2001-03; he managed a 12-22 record there before taking a job as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator in 2004.

No announcements of an impending hire have been made by Southern Miss, and no reports have surface about any contract terms that Johnson may have agreed to, but the "two sources with direct knowledge of the search" at USM that the Clarion-Ledger cited have indicated that the hire is a done deal. will provide more informaton when it becomes available.

Southern Miss hires So. Car. DC Ellis Johnson

I know it's hard but let's keep on point to what I said. Clempson is out trolling. :)  The thread topic is about Ellis Johnson being hired at Southern Miss.  Something that can be looked at as positive for BOTH schools.  You felt the need to come to the post and start saying negative things about South Carolina and attempting to flame the post.  Again, you are trolling the response I had when I called you out for trolling. :)  If your 'accomplishments' this year far outweigh losing to the Gamecocks for the third time in a row... why are you not busy discussing your game with WVU instead of trying to dig at USC's DC taking a head coach position elsewhere?

I'm not even going to defend what you said about ineligible players in 2010 and 2011 because you have no clue what you are talking about.  Please do some research about what actually happen before you spit out false facts please.

It seems to me that it must be more important to Clempson fans to do anything possible to try to flame any post regarding South Carolina... because deep down inside... it's still bittersweet season if you are still out in numbers trying to flame South Carolina fans.   I think it's awesome Clempson finally pulled a win for the ACC championship game.  I wished they got to play someone like Michigan.  THat would have been a fun game to watch.  Hopefully WVU/Clempson will be a lot of fireworks.

@ Vehemon , you are what , joking ? We won a 14th conference title , beat 4 of the 6 ranked teams we played , didn't drop a home game and are playing in the BCS Orange Bowl. I know that we lost to our kid sisters for a 3rd straight year , but our accomplishments otherwise far outweigh any misery caused by a loss to the Coots. 65-40-4 , although since ya played 4 ineligible players in 2010 and 2011 , 2 of those wins are probably going back into the hat. Laughing at yall is like filthy fun.

The Coots DC was smart enough to know whats about to befall one of America's lowly football have-nots. In over a century of playing football the folks in ColaTown have never really gotten it right..and now it appears that cheating and skirting rules has also been too hard for them to be competent at. To compete with the rest of the SEC they began with major violations under Slobberin' Lou and this has continued with greater urgency under the Ol' Ball Crutch .To no avail would appear. If Ohio State got a year bowl ban then Carolina should get 2. The admin at USuCk knew about this illegal activity and did nothing , Spurrts knew it too and limply made them "stop it" , like a mommy telling her baby to be quiet. I find the self imposed proposition to be laughable , and so will the NCAA. They are so proud that they have three straight wins over Clemson ...and yet the fact that they cannot even get themselves into the BCS with all that big bad SEC talent they sqwawk about all day long. The NCAA should give them a 3 year bowl ban , take 3 scholarships a year until 2014 and considering that their boosters obviously have money to throw at recruits and prospects , fine them the amount of money that they get this year in their second tier bowl game. GET Some !

As long as he doesn't forget that we've got  a high-powered offense, with the roster for a high-powered offense (and hopefully now a SUPER defensive mind... BRING BACK THE NASTY BUNCH!), things will be just okay in Hattiesburg...

But he better not have any losing seasons...   or heads will roll!

If the Cocks get some sort of punishment for "minor sins committed", it will be cause CLEMPSON led the way in 1982 under the "Danny Ford Era"

Rememeber that IPTAY stands for "Its Probation Time Again Ya'll!"

Hopefully the Gamecocks can do a swap with Georgia (Arkansas for Ol Miss) and WIN the SEC Title after running the slate in the EAST Division!

Larry Fadora is not leaving Southern Mississippi until after their bowl game.  Everett Withers, current interim coach, will still coach UNC in their bowl game.  It appears Gus Malzahn will still perform the offensive coordinator duties in Auburn's bowl game.

Pitt's fans and players have a legitimate gripe as Todd Graham sent his players a text message to inform them he's leaving for his dream job, Arizona State.  If I were Arizona State's AD, even if I wanted him right now, I couldn't help but know in the back of my mind that he left Pitt this way.  It's not a very honorable way to go out.  Still, I don't know all the details that went into the decision.

As for a rule, I'm no lawyer so I don't know how binding it is but schools are supposed to ask permission from the current employing school before talking to one of their coaches year round.

Carolina always has a good defense, we'll just have to find another good DC. Anybody is better than Kevin Steele and that swiss cheese defense.
