UPDATE: June Jones is no longer believed to be a candidate for the Arizona State head coaching job.

"A source close to the football program said talks with June Jones to become the program's next coach have broken off and "he is out" as a candidate," wrote's Craig Morgan. "It's unclear whether widespread fan opposition, Jones' buyout at SMU or another factor led to the breakdown in negotiations."

SMU's June Jones will follow Dennis Erickson as the next Arizona State football coach, according to a source close to the program.'s Craig Morgan is reporting that Jones will be named the team's next head coach, with the official announcement likely this week. Jones has helped pull the Mustangs out of the shadow of the NCAA's "Death Penalty" in 1987, which crippled the program for almost two decades. After a 1-11 season in his first year at SMU, Jones has compiled a 22-17 record over the last three seasons and delivered three straight bowl appearances - their first postseason trips since the sanctions.

Jones' wide-open offensive style falls right in line with the recent Pac-12 hires of Mike Leach at Washington State and Rich Rodriguez to in-state rival Arizona. He has a history of reviving programs, and after the Sun Devils have arguably underachieved under Erickson he will be asked to take on a similar challenge. The move also comes at the same time as SMU's move to the Big East, which will be made official in a conference call late Wednesday afternoon.

You go to hell, you pathetic SMU fan.  No one even cares or let alone knows about SMU.  He is lucky ASU even gave him a shot.

I just had to chime in on the UofP issue. I know that when I go for my heart surgeries, I ALWAYS look for a UofP product! U of P, seriously?? What scientific research goes on there? How many Nobel's you sporting? How many graduates are members of the National Academy of science? How many graduates have Nobel votes? What is the latest breakthrough in any field to come out of the U of P? Get real. I was surprised it qualified for a .edu domain!

Thats Laughable I cant think any GaySU alums making noise. You were right about your mediocrity. Nobody winning championships like Jason Terry. With Mike Bibby on the other side. No #2 draft pick in Derrick Williams and part of the new under armor program. No #1 tight end in Rob Gronkowski breaking records left and right. Arizona always has and always will dominate tempe normal. Just look at overall football basketball and baseball records. Ill admit you have some hot chicks though.

Are you guys really ASU alumns? How can you be so angry if you are? We went to a sick school that is LOADED with fine looking women and chock full of ridiculous drink specials. Just kidding kind of but since I only did my undergrad there I wasn't looking to change the world. Relax idiot touting UofP (that's what you call it now?) It's a freaking night school and you obviously recruit for them. Give it a rest you sound like a dope. Regardless of all the noise Lisa Love needs to go. I liked the Erickson and Sendek hirings but our programs are wallowing in mediocrity. A nice donation from Barry Bonds wouldn't have hurt but that maggot has forgotten all about us. We are no mid-level D1 program either for the idiot that dropped that one. Check the rosters of the NFL and MLB kid. There are a whole lot of ASU alumns making noise. Certainly more than UofGAY and UofP (that still cracks me up). Mid-level? I think not. Go get the Vest, deal with the sanctions and in 3 or 4 years we compete against OSU in the Rose Bowl. How could Tressel refuse? Now I'm going to sit back and recall some of those fine blonds from my wonderful classes at ASU. What an AWESOME place to do an undergrad!!!!!

I've take traditional classes, and I've taken online or correnspondence classes (albiet not from University of Phoenix).

My personal story is that I have learned loads more from my online classes, and in a shorter period of time, than traditional classes.  I have finished the online/correspondence courses with a throrough understanding of the subject at hand and have also made better grades.  This includes research projects.

Education: getting the knowledge into your brain, is what's important.

Hey, that's your loss. I guess Boeing, Stanford, Verizon, Kraft Foods, NASA, and many other major companies/organizations that pay for their employees to study at UOP have something to learn from your rinky dink outfit. If it was really that bad all of the public schools (the "good" universities) wouldn't be following their lead. And there's no reason for the DOE to cut off UOP's funding considering each UOP student costs the taxpayer SEVEN TIMES LESS money than an equal student going to, say, ASU. Just another example of the private sector doing the same thing as the public sector, but doing it better.

Anyways, as an ASU fan I was ok with the June Jones hire. It wasn't a slam dunk, but I thought he would do ok. Is it possible that they backed out of Jones because Sumlin became available (given that Calhoun is interviewing for the A&M job)? Who else is on the list now that Fedora took the UNC gig?

University of Phoenix provides close to the worst education money can buy, nobody respects a degree from U of P. I don't allow my employees to receive tuition reimbursement for a fake MBA. The Department of Education should cut them off from any federal student loans considering the defualt rates coming out of that dump.

Jones and Jones' agent Leigh Steinberg wanted ASU to pay for Jones' $2M buyout from SMU.  ASU had said no to that provision, but gave a tentative contract offer to Steinberg, which needed more negotiations to become final.  Steinberg wanted to play a game where the media pressure generated from the announcement would more or less force ASU to pay the buyout (to save face), so he told Jones that he had the job.  Jones began to pack up and start the process of leaving SMU.  As word spread of Jones going to ASU, I am guessing they weren't too happy that this buzz was being generated and Jones was acting without an actual signed contract, and ASU pulled the offer.
