Report: Tennessee WR coach Baggett on way out

Despite the opinions of the angrier wings of the Tennessee fanbase, Derek Dooley isn't going anywhere until 2012 at the earliest. But when you're Tennessee, you simply don't go 1-7 in the SEC, miss out on a bowl at 5-7 overall, and lose to Kentucky without having some kind of staff shakeup. And that shakeup has reportedly started.

According to "a source familiar with the personnel but not authorized to speak publicly" who spoke to the Knoxville News-SentinelVols wide receiver coach Charlie Baggett will not return to the Vol staff next season. Baggett was hired by Dooley in 2010 and spent two years in Knoxville, earning a $400,000 annual salary.

Neither Baggett nor Dooley nor the Vol program has confirmed Baggett's depature. The early favorite to replace Baggett is current Kentucky receivers coach and former Volunteer quarterbacking legend Tee Martin.

Per the News-Sentinel, Baggett has elected to voluntarily retire. Though no doubt that report will receiver some skepticism, between the efforts of players like of Da'Rick Rogers and Justin Hunter (who missed nearly the entire 2011 season with an ACL tear), wide receiving play has largely been one of the strengths of Dooley's tenure. It seems unlikely that with his results in both the recruiting and production departments, Baggett would be forced out.

Then again: 5-7 demands change of some kind, and we won't be shocked at all if Baggett's departure is just the first of a handful on the Vol staff.

My question is how many of the people that are so upset with Dooley has ever coached major college football? You have no idea what the coach goes thru in his job! Give him one more year to get this on a better level!! One thing he is doing is making these kids understand the have to act like they have some sense!! Not be a bunch of thugs and not shame the VOLS! GOD bless you coach and all of you need to stop judging the man it is not your job unless someone made you GOD and we all know that is not the case!! Good luck next year coach!! Win them all, but then there will still be some that want you fired!!

Let's face it: the guy is an amateur and is out-classed as a coach in the SEC. After the culture created by the latter Fulmer years and the Kiffin year, I think the Vols needed someone wholesome like Dooley, but I was completely underwhelmed when it was announced he would be the head coach of the second-winningest college football team in the country. "Derek Who?" I think I said. And I don't think there has been one quality win. And the opportunities where we could have (LSU last season comes to mind) he made amateur mistakes and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. He's an amateur. Majors and Fulmer were high-quality SEC coaches; Dooley is not. In terms of creating a culture, I think the guy is top-notch, but we don't need a guidance counselor; we need someone who's going to restore greatness. Dooley ain't the guy to turn this around and I don't care what people are saying, Mike Leach isn't either and I, for one, am glad WSU snatched him up.

Thanks Charlie. Enjoy your retirement.  As for Tee coming in, my advise for him would be to stay away. Now is NOT the time to come to Tennessee.

Dooley took over a mess at La. Tech only to take over a mess at UT.  His record doesn't speak to his coaching abilities but more to condition of the programs he took over.  He is under the gun now and probably will not make it to year 4 but hop I'm wrong.

Yep..it was Baggett's fault that the wide receivers were injured for most of the year. Vols to the Sun Belt and promote Middle Tenn State.

Probably doing the guy a favor. Any coach who does this poorly at a major football college should be fired imediately. I said it when Weiss was coach at ND and Im saying it now. Tennessee fans had decent expectations this year ..... but I didn't. They didnt beat anyone last season either other than scrubs like Tenn. Martin .... Kentucky last season was a premier win. Realistically , If it werent for an OT win over Vanderbilt. They would be 0-8 in the SEC. How do you build on that? Does Tennessee think he will magically have a .500 ball club next year? Perhaps f the schedule is lite ..... but he won't be any major team in the conference next season either. Stop wasting time, fire him and get someone who can get on the road the recovery ....Dooley isnt it. I wouldn't normally care but you are making the SEC look bad ...

The problem with Dooley is that he was not a good coach at Louisiana Tech either so the optimism had to be subdued overall.  Tennessee would have been better off with Phil Fulmer still at the helm.  Dooley did inherit a mess when Lane Kiffin left but where do the excuses end and the action begin?  1-7 in the SEC is pathetic and now this team has had back to back terrible years
