If you're locked in a down-to-the-wire battle for a starting quarterback job in the SEC, the last thing you'll want to do is get in some kind of off-field hot water that gives your coaches an excuse to look elsewhere. The last thing. Right?

Apparently Ole Miss's Randall Mackey didn't get the memo. The Clarion-Ledger is reporting that Mackey was involved in a fight at a local bar/music venue and arrested by Oxford police. He was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, and released.

Houston Nutt then announced today that Mackey would "likely" be suspended for the Rebels' season opener against BYU.

On the scale of 1 to serious, an arrest for disorderly conduct following what seems to be a minor fracas falls somewhere in the 2-to-2.5 range, we're thinking; a Jordan Jefferson situation, this is not. But unlike Jefferson, Mackey had no margin for error where his efforts to win a starting job were concerned. His coaches have said multiple times this offseason that West Virginia transfer Barry Brunetti would take the first snap if the season "began today," and fellow former JUCO Zack Stoudt has brought a pocket-passing game that Mackey can't match.

After a Saturday scrimmage in which all three candidates had their positive and negative moments, Nutt was still playing coy about who he would ultimately name the starter--and it's entirely possible the Rebels could settle on a rotation once Mackey returns from suspension. (If we had to lay down a wager on the starter, we'd stick with Brunetti, the player whose skill set most closely resembles that of 2010 starter Jeremiah Masoli and who is now a heavy favorite to get the start against the Cougars.)

However you slice it, though, Mackey clearly already had a substantial challenge earning the No. 1 nod, and proving his leadership qualities -- or lack thereof -- by getting arrested hasn't done a thing to help him meet it.

LSU would be great for Randall. That would put him with his #1 receiver from his high school...Rueben Randall.
Ole Miss don't want that, they already have their hands full with LSU. Not to mention Randall Mackey is a great
kid.

Try to remember this is supposed to be a forum where young people can post, without the junior high school banter of profanity.

not good enough.
he needs to stay at Cold Piss

First, F*ck you

Second, if Randall Mackey isn't an upgrade over Jordan Jefferson, "Pick 6" Lee, and Zach Mettengroper then we've got problems this season.

Third, no one would bypass Oxford for the stale smell of corndogs that seems to linger over Red Stick.   That place should be razed Sodom and Gemorrah style.

Skreffty you need to name the criminals (and I am not talking about DUI and public intox) the Petrino has recruited and not kicked off the team? His first year weakest position was LB and he kicked Freddy Fairchild, by far the best LB off the team. This year the weakest position is OT and he kicked starting OT Anothony Oden off the team for his second DUI. I'm not saying Les Miles is a non disciplinarian but to compare Petrino to Nutt when it comes to discipline is ludicrous, and really as far as that goes every school in the SEC besides Vandy has had their share of troublemakers.
You do realize that Petrino coached at Louisville before coming to Arkansas right?  Now go check out the arrests there and the lack of discipline...and you can't just arbitraly decide which charges do and don't count.

WOW an SEC QB arrested to fighting...nothing new here.  Lets face it, thse school are letting players in that have no moral backbone.  These guy could not get into these institutions on their own and they piss away this golden chance.  Again lets not forget that LSU and Ole Miss are SEC school, really not too hard to get in.  So is anyone (University Pres) going to do the right thing ever and kick these hood-rats off campus forever?  The SEC is the best football conf, but at what cost?
You do realize that the Big-10 leads with players arrested don't you?  The SEC has a couple kids get into bar fights.  Not good but much better than the institutionalized cheating/cover-ups the Big-10, Pac 10 (11, 12), and the ACC are having to deal with.  If this is the worst the SEC has to deal with, then it is doing just fine.

Manboobs, criminal activity isn't just an SEC problem, in fact it isn't even the worst bud.

According to our data the University of Pittsburgh had the most players with police records (22) which the school said in statement, was "unacceptable." The school was followed by Iowa (18), Arkansas (18), Boise State (16) and Penn state (16).

Among the major conferences, the Big Ten led our list with 50 players. The ACC was next with 39. Then came the SEC (33), Big East (27), PAC-10 (19) and Big 12 (16).

The QB gets in a fight and he gets arrested.  Okay, I hope he has learned his lesson, pleads it down, and eventually rebounds to lead his team to glory on the gridiron.  As opposed to LSU, where they just cover try their best to cover it up.

Curious, for Ole Miss fans/students...is there a student dress code?

I went to a game last year and the ONLY thing anyone wore was sundresses for girls, khakis/polo shirt/croakies for guys.
