Auburn
has announced which quarterback has won the battle to try and fill Cam Newton's oversized shoes this season. And that winner is ... Barrett Trotter.

While far from a household name outside the SEC, Trotter is in his fourth year as a redshirt junior and in his third year of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn's system. Even with only nine career passes to his name, that was enough experience to fend off challenges from redshirt sophomore Clint Moseley and true freshman Kiehl Frazier.

"Barrett has worked extremely hard to earn the starting quarterback job at Auburn University," Gene Chizik said in a statement. "Barrett understands the huge responsibility that comes with being the starting quarterback at Auburn and we are confident in his ability to lead this team."

But if Trotter has to deal with the pressure that comes with that "huge responsibility" (not to mention the shadow still cast by Newton), he's also been handed one of the most gilt-edged opportunities an FBS quarterback could ask for. Going back to his days at Tulsa, Malzahn's quarterbacks have never failed to deliver the statistical goods; even Chris Todd (whose arm strength might be described as "pedestrian" only if you're feeling charitable) somehow wound up setting a school record for touchdown passes and finishing third in the SEC in passing efficiency in 2009 ... and he'd only practiced under Malzahn for the length of one fall camp.

So as long as Trotter remains upright and avoids making enough killer mistakes to get benched -- and given enough time to learn the offense, the more athletic Frazier will look awfully appealing -- he's likely been handed the keys to a statistical fortune. If Auburn can avoid the kind of sub-.500 collapse that afflicted Texas last season, it's a safe bet that many, many more college football fans will know his name by the end of the season.

Congrats for Barrett for winning the job.He deserves it as he actually gave Cam a run for it last year as Trotter is a much more accurate passer, and the coaches didnt know Cams running would be so good in the SEC.Trotter has been around for four years and he knows Malzhans systm the best of the three, but he needs to enjoy because next year he will have Frazier and Pike competing against him...Aubur goes 9-3,they ae young but they are extremely talented with what was just named the best coaching staff in the nation leading them,I think they will be o.k..

Wow I just looked it up.  Since 1922, Iowa State has had 19 coaches and only 2 have had a winning record.  One with 18-17 in the 40's and one went 36-32 in the early 70's.

I am not making excuses for Chizik.  5-19 is very bad, but prior to his arrival at Iowa State he was in fact the hottest coordinator in the country with two back to back undefeated seasons at Auburn and Texas.  The more I watch his locker room speeches I am beginning to feel that if this guy has the talent, he can be one of the greats.

Gene Chizik the best coach in the nation????  This is the same guy 95% of the Auburn nation didn't want.

Yeah and 95% of statistics are made up on the spot.  Where did you get your stat?  Youtube?  Yes, may were not a fan of the hire and the media ran with it, but so what?  since then the man has done nothing but prove evryone wrong.  Why didn't your team hire Malzahn?  He was right there in Tulsa waiting for a better job.  Seems like Chizik was ahead of the curve on many coaches snatching him up.  He has put together a great staff and recruited well.

He was horrible at Iowa St.

Yeah and so was the other 6 coaches before him.  You have to go back to the early 70's to find a coach with a winning record.  Nothing against, Iowa State, but it is very hard to win there.

and without Cam Newton, and almost with him, they could/should have lost 3-5 games (see Kentucky, Clemson, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi St.).

I agree.  Did you see how Cam Newton entered the 11 players bodies and held Oregon to 19 points?  11 with 1 minute to go?  That was impressive.  Did you see how Cam Newton held off Alabama in the second half?  Did you see how Newton would throw the ball then teleport to also catch the balls too?  Or how about when Cam also rushed for the other 2000 yards by running backs?  I am so glad that one man team carried us all year.  It's always easy to go back and say, you see, they were not that good, they almost lost to....blah blah.  You haven't got a clue.  It is very hard to go undefeated and some of the best teams have close calls.  Are you 12?

but take Newton and Fairley and some of those other starters and to think they will win more than 7 games is laughable

Yeah and why would we want to do that and what hypothetical world are you living in?  Why should we take Newton and Fairly and other starters off the team?  What a stupid comment.  Your sorry logic can be applied to any championship team.  You know, I am not sure if Southern Cal could have done it without Leinart and Reggie.  Thanks Captain Obvious!  Do you even watch football?  It's a team effort and no championship team could survive without their star players.

Auburn is rebuilding no doubt, but you are acting as if Auburn isn't one of the toughest games on team's schedules year in and year out.  You can laugh all you want, but no coach in their right mind thinks they will "thump" Auburn.  We may be thin this year, but talent is coming up and we are not going anywhere, even with our horrible coach.

I hope for 9. Auburn with a very thin team went 8-5 two years ago. We went 5-7 the year before that and we almost literally had no offense. For a 5-7 or 6-6 year to happen things would have to go horribly wrong. I hope for 9.

It's always interesting to see the 'other' comments. Chizik is a good coach and I want to see the number of coaches who could have guided a team through what Chizik guided his team through without dropping a game. You can't go undefeated without some luck. But you're not going to go undefeated with just luck. Malzahn's offense was clowned and described as 'high school' but now 'he's the reason Auburn is winning'. Get real. Of course it's a very important cog. So is Roof's D. So is Yoxall for that matter. Team effort. Not just Malzahn.

'Paid' comments...yawn, next.

And last, good luck with Muschamp, Gators. That Muschamp/Weis element will be a combustible one.

I am not as optomistic as some of these Auburn fans. Trotter while he will be able to manage the system since he has been in it so long is a far cry from Newton. However, he is going to surprise a few teams early with his ability to run the ball (no he's not a Cam type runner but definitely better than average). I say 7-5 or 8-4 is realistic. They will win a game or two they are not supposed too. I think a lot of teams in the SEC have just as many question marks as Auburn.

The fact that people think Bama and LSU will "thump" Auburn is pretty laughable. While I think they will lose both of these games those two offenses are a far cry from being impressive. I think they will be low scoring affairs. As for the comments about paying players hasn't that horse been beaten to death (not to mention stillllll no proof)?

As for the Utah State fan predicting a loss in the first game you are just as delusional as these Auburn fans thinking we are going 10-2.

St. and  Georgia.  They had a great year last year, but now that some of the best players money can buy have moved on, gonna be rough on Auburn fans this year.

Gene Chizik is the best head coach in the nation.  Gus is lucky to be at Auburn working under a great leader like coach Chizik.  The way the Newton situation was handled was amazing.  If Malzhan were to leave for a head coaching position coach Chizik could find another great mind to take over if he spends 1.6 mil.  The head coach is the guy who makes sure that the talent exisits on the field and in the coaching staff as well as keeping th eteam united.  Gene is great at all of those key requirements.  He also was responsible for some key 4th down decisions last year that helped the team win big games.  No matter what everyone thinks of Auburn or Chizik does not matter.  Auburn will win this year and many years down the road.

If you think that Auburn will be 6-6 this year for Auburn is an impossibility.  The coaching staff is too good and the players are too talented to lose to 6 teams.  I think that you are giving the other teams in the SEC way too much credit.  Only 1 team had a chance to score with Auburn and that was Arkansas before the injury to their tailback.  LSU and Alabama will have very good defenses but will struggle offensively.  Both teams have no offensive identity.  Auburn will light up the score board as much if not more than last year.  Auburn was good offensively in 2009 with very little talent.  Auburn will lose 4 games in a worst case scenerio.  Auburns scoring defense will be much better than last year due to a much improved secondary.  I cannot wait to see Auburn thump the competetion again in 2011.  WDE!
